The first time Joan Blondell met Jimmy Cagney was at an audition for Maggie the Magnificent. "Every actor and actress alive wanted the part," Joan said. "There were so many waiting I was sure I’d never get [in]. Finally I got into the outer office and found myself jammed up against a red-haired mug. He looked at me and said, ‘Your eyes are so big they look like they’re about to pop out of your head. What’s there to be afraid of?’” The red-haired mug was Jimmy Cagney, and the two were both cast in the play and would go on to make several films together.
